Q?How Does Photovoltaics (PV) Work?

When some materials are exposed to sunlight, they release small amounts of electricity. This is known as the photovoltaic effect. When describing solar cells, the photovoltaic effect is the conversion of sun energy into electricity by the cells.This is how it works. Sunlight is composed of photons, or particles of solar energy. These photons contain various amounts of energy corresponding to the different wavelengths of the solar spectrum. When photons strike a PV cell, the energy of the photon is transferred to an electron in an atom of the cell, which is made of a semiconductor material.

With its newfound energy, the electron escapes from its normal position on the atom and becomes part of the current in an electrical circuit. When this happens, the electron creates a “hole.” Special electrical properties of the PV cell, specifically a built-in electric field, provide voltage that drives the current through an external load, such as a light bulb, a hairdryer or a television set.

Q?What is Net Metering? How does it work?

Net Metering means that instead of your meter only counting the energy you take from the grid, it also counts the energy you put back on the grid. Net Metering allows a renewable energy system owner to get credit (at the retail rate) for the power you put onto the grid when the sun is shining. Most states in the Southeast have Net Metering policies while some do not. We will help you navigate the process with your utility to ensure you receive the proper credit for your power.

Q?How big of a solar PV system do I need?

That answer depends on what you consume. You may only need a little or you may need more. Proper sizing of a PV system is typically dictated by the customers consumption and budget. ENTEC will do an in depth survey of your home or business to ensure your investment is exactly what you need.

Q?How long is the payback on a PV system? 
A.

That answer changes all the time. The cost of the system, the cost of power, tax credits and incentives also play a factor on how quickly you will reach your point of profit. With current incentives that is typically 6-8 years. Without it is 10-12 years. Either way, you will make your money back and you WILL profit from your system. Most panel manufacturers warrantee their products for 25-30 years which mean you have A LOT of profit coming. With energy pricing increasing every year, NOW is the time to invest in renewable energy.

Q?What renewable energy has the fastest return on investment?

Like the previous question that’s hard to answer. Typically, believe it or not a Solar Pool Heater has the quickest return with about 2-3 years when compared with a gas pool heater.
